The Marvel Netflix Universe (MNU) has firmly solidified itself as the darker, grittier side of the Marvel Universe. Whilst only fleeting mentions are made to its bigger brother the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) the two do exist side by side but due to the family nature of the MCU, it is doubtful that we will see the MNU heroes team up with their big screen cousins.

The MNU has done an amazing job so far of producing narratives that span 2 seasons of Daredevil, and single seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist which all cumulates into The Defenders on 18th August. The MNU ensemble piece is its answer to its bigger brothers box office juggernaut team up Avengers.

The Avengers movies are used to mark an end to that particular phase of narrative and its repercussions extend over to the next phase. It isn’t quite clear if that formula is been used by Netflix but it maybe the reason why it has just committed to boosting production of all its shows and producing 3 seasons a year.
Today’s announcement confirmed they will have filmed a record 135 episodes before the end of 2017. The episodes will be spread among five franchises: The Defenders, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and The Punisher. Compared to previous years, this mammoth schedule marks a clear and striking acceleration of ambition for Marvel.

Before 2017 Netflix produced two marvel series a year. 2015 gave us Daredevil and Jessica Jones. 2016 gave us the second series of Daredevil and the first season of Luke Cage. All that is due to change in 2017 though with the arrival of Iron Fist, The Defenders series in a couple of weeks and The Punisher by the end of the year.

The MNU shows have gone from strength to strength until Iron Fist earlier this year. With complaints of poor characterisation, timid fight scenes and a story arc full of plot holes it makes you wonder if three seasons a year is too much of a strain on the writers and production staff? maybe the woes of Iron Fist were due to resources being funneled into The Defenders?

What do you think? Are you excited to get three additions to the MNU each year? Or are you worried about a drop in quality and would prefer two instead? As always let us know your thoughts in the comments below
