Transformers: The Last Knight massively underperformed at the box office this summer which isn’t great news for Paramount who are having their first crack at extending the universe with spin off solo movies. The first robot in disguise to get his own movie is, of course, none other than Bumblebee.

The Plot synopsis was announced earlier today and of course in true Hollywood style at the moment, it is a prequel movie. We shouldn’t have expected anything else really but there is one little bit of information in the synopsis that should excite fans from the 80’s see if you can spot it….

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

So this film looks to have one little silver lining in that we will get to see everyone’s favourite Autobot will move away from his current movie incarnation and will, in fact, be in his original VW beetle form. This is great news for generation one fans and will surely help turn round the woes of the previous Micheal Bay horror shows.

Also announced today was the release date for the film, which suggests paramount have massive confidence in the movie since Paramount has moved the release date of the film to December 21, 2018, putting it right in the way of Warner Bros.’ Aquaman, which comes out that same day, and Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, which comes out three days after that. That is a massive gamble from the studio to go up against not one but two expected big box office hitters.
