The latest bit of news to come out of Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim this weekend was news that Dumbo is to receive the live action treatment. Following on from the success of Jungle Book and the box office smash Beauty and the Beast, Disney continues to raid its back catalogue of classic films and polish them up of the modern age.
This time round Disney have handed the directors chair to none other than Tim Burton himself! Tim is well known for his dark, Gothic style which could be well suited to some scenes from the classic Disney adventure but could make for an interesting yet completely different interpretation of the classic film. The pressure to hold up to its predecessor is high considering the original (which was first released in 1941) went on to win an Oscar for its score and received a Best Original Song nomination. The plan for the remake is to recreate the magic of the original in 3D, capturing Dumbo and his animal friends using state of the art visual effects technology.
As well as revealing Tim Burton as director Disney also announced that the cast joining him will be made up of Micheal Keaton, Danny Devito, Eva Green and Colin Farrell with the synopis for the film being:
Holt Farrier (Farrell), a former circus star struggling to adjust to civilian life after his wartime experiences. Circus owner Max Medici (DeVito) hires Holt to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. When Holt’s children (Parker and Hobbins) discover that Dumbo can fly, smart-talking entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Keaton) and an aerial artist named Colette Marchant (Green) swoop in to make the peculiar pachyderm a star.
Dumbo is due to soar into cinemas in March 2019 but in the meantime you can check out our range of Disney products over at Clubit.co.uk
