We spoke to Brian Buffon, from Game Church at EGX 2015 about it’s role within gaming or the games industry. Brian told us that it was quite a simple mission statement. To roll up to gaming expo’s and, “tell Gamers that Jesus loves them” whilst offering a bunch of Game Church freebies!
Now, Game Church may seem a little out of place at EGX. As nowhere else is there any sign of Religion; arguably the only faith on show is a joy in creative expression from the crowds of Gamers and Developers gathered at EGX 2015.
Brian Buffon mentions that “A lot of things have been said about video game culture by the church” unfortunately we couldn’t verify which ‘Church’ and therefore determine if those ‘things’ said were positive or not. However, if Game Church were looked at the same way as any of the game developers on site. We would certainly be looking at them as a decent PR outfit.
Certainly many different flavours of Religion have invested resources in arts and ‘creativity’ since recorded history eschewed, all-be-it with varying degrees of censorship and bastardisation. So, Game Church shouldn’t be seen as a particularly revolutionary concept with that in mind.
It should also be noted that the members of Game Church, pleasant, polite and certainly happy to let the public come to them, are all gaming enthusiasts. So perhaps this could be looked at as some Christian PR in atonement for legacy comments made about unfounded supposition regarding the depravity and debauchery of some games. It could be that Game Church can see an ever burgeoning social movement of games and gamers in which to spread their message. Or, it could be a bunch of fairly inert christians wanting to visit some game expo’s and enjoy being there around their favourite games. Perhaps a combination of all of the above?
Brian was lovely and it was great to have the opportunity to chat about Game Church. However, unfortunately his US roots were exposed in his complete lack of irony when stating that ‘Halo’ was his favourite game!
