At EGX 2015, the UK’s largest gaming expo we stopped by to talk to Russell Clarke of Payload Studios about their new game Terra Tech. Set in a fantastical futuristic world where prospectors are battling to explore and harvest the “Exo” planets’ natural resources to sell sell back on earth!
The player starts as a lone prospector. Controlling a ‘simple’ modular vehicle. The primary objective of the game is to become ‘top-dog’ in the prospecting world. To do this the player must build their base and expand their fleet. Whilst defending them selves from attacks by rival prospectors.
Scavenging vehicle parts and weapons from other prospectors is fundamental in accelerating your capabilities in the game. Because the vehicles are modular this also allows for near limitless build and customisation options to your vehicle in the game. The player also has the option to research new technologies and purchase design blueprints to boost your fleet’s prospecting capabilities.
At the beginning of each game. The world in which a player finds themselves is procedurally generated. Meaning, that every time the player starts a game the environment in which they find themselves poses different challenges and features.
Russ, highlighted that a big influence on the game is ‘Lego’ and with the strong capabilities to change, mod and ‘explode’ vehicles we can see that they have implemented a great concept into the game. There seems to be so much scope for your imagination when continuing through the game, as to the specific capabilities you want from your fleet of vehicles.
Terra Tech is currently (October 2015) available in Steam Early Access for PC, Mac & Linux. As well as the Humble Store. Also, it’s well worth following them on Twitch for regular (Daily) updates about the game and it’s development.
